There is more to Vicenza than the town, the Berici Hills and its famous villas; it is also a province which competes with its main town in offering the most fascinating and varied landscapes, from the plane to the hills, the mountains and works of art that represent some of the most splendid signs of civilization in the Veneto region.

We have already mentioned Marostica and its famous Game of Chess in the romantic itinerary. From the home town of the fair Lionora we move on to Bassano del Grappa which welcomes visitors in its characteristic old centre built on a steep slope, its "piazzotti", towers, rich Civic Museum with 20,000 prints bequeathed by the Remondini family and paintings by the Da Pontes, but especially with the most famous of all Bassano's monuments, the covered bridge designed by Palladio and known to all as the Ponte degli Alpini.

Dominating the plain are Asiago and the Plateau of the Seven Communes, famous and excellently equipped tourist and winter sports resorts, a paradise for skiers with hundreds of kilometres of pistes. Between 1915 and 1918, some of the bloodiest battles of the First World War were fought on the Plateau; at Asiago stands the great monumental Memorial that holds the remains of thousands of the fallen.

In the Val d'Assa is an extraordinary park of rock carvings, made by man between 5000 and 3000 B.C.

The Astico separates the Plateau of the Seven Communes from the Plateau of Tonezza del Cimone, with its enchanting sites surrounded by the green of the woods in summer and covered with a mantle of snow in winter; then there is Posina and its valley, the tiny lakes at Laghi, Fogazzaro's Velo d'Astico, Arsiero and the Valdastico, the realm of the trout, lands of legendary vegetables and mountain honey.

This year marks the third centenary of the mineral waters of the well-known spa of Recoaro, an emerald green hollow set in the scenery of the Little Dolomites, an ideal place for excursions and winter sports. The panorama is completed by two "European capitals" of the textile industry: Schio and Valdagno.
